Insurance Companies Offer Their Insureds Spill Reporting Service

Insurance companies that have heard about the Spill Center™ partnership program are liking what they hear. Insurers who enroll in the insurance program encourage their insureds to register at no charge for spill support as a value-added service.

The 24/7 support system is designed to help insureds who are involved in spills to request immediate assistance from Spill Center’s experts to find and dispatch cleanup contractors, expedite regulatory reporting, reduce costs associated with environmental releases and mitigate potential liability.

“Insurance companies offer registration in this program at no charge to their clients to help with the mitigation of spill exposures,” says Tom Moses, Spill Center president. “The service is designed to improve their clients’ ability to respond quickly in the aftermath of a spill, whenever and wherever it may occur, through their partnership with Spill Center.

“Through the program, registered insureds have access to critical information needed for a fast, effective response to pollution events of all types. That includes a database with current spill reporting requirements for more than 30,000 local, state, provincial and federal jurisdictions throughout North America, as well as listings of nearly 3,000 qualified cleanup contractors,” notes Tom.

“Any company can become a spill generator. For that reason, insurers are offering this service to their clients. Being prepared for environmental incidents – on the highway or at a fixed facility – is the best way to contain costs and limit liability associated with spills. The Spill Center program helps their insureds improve their preparedness to handle spills efficiently and cost-effectively,” adds Tom, who founded Spill Center in 1990. He has a law degree and a certificate in Hazardous Materials Control and Emergency Response. He also served as a U.S. EPA toxicologist.

“Clients can report a spill to Spill Center via the Internet, by phone or with an app for mobile devices which provides the spill location and company information. Upon notification, a Spill Center compliance associate immediately begins the process of responding to the release,” Tom explains.

The spill generator can select available contractors from a list prepared by Spill Center and team with Spill Center compliance associates to coordinate and manage the cleanup. The service is designed to help insureds report spills on time and avoid fines and penalties for non-compliance with environmental regulations.
